When I'm a decrepit old man staring at the ceiling in a lonely old folks' home, I'll smile as I remember last Friday's CD Release Party. Wow. What a gathering of friends, old and new. Dear Richard, The Garage Ma Hall is a one-of-a-kind in Las Vegas. Thank you for excellent sound and wonderful hospitality. The boys in the band (and that one girl) played their asses off. It was great to see Digital Insight Studio owner Rob Devlin, who also brought a fine, fine bottle of single malt scotch to help celebrate. (I tried to pick friends with really good taste in fine hooch.) Thanks to Alex Oliver ["Poppermost"] for a rousing introduction. A million thanks to our manager, Jackie Robinson, for chasing down every niggling detail so that I could relax and sing. A splendid time was guaranteed for all. Steven Kalas |
CD Release Party - May 11, 2007 I want to extend a personal invitation for you to join us on Friday, May 11 as we celebrate the release of our 5th CD, Lessons From the Dead, at the Garage Ma Hall in Las Vegas. This will be a gathering of friends and fans both new and old for an evening of hellos, goodbyes, great memories, and a new future. Times are changing, as are dreams and goals, and this could well be the last time PaperCymbal plays together in public. It won’t be the same if you’re not there. The Garage Ma Hall is a great place to gather with friends and listen to music. You are welcome to bring your own refreshments: wine, great scotch (does Steven have any friends that drink great Scotch?), or a cooler with your favorite beer or soda. Munchies, if you want. Take-out from Macaroni Grill. Or KFC. Whatever makes you happy. Invite friends. Teens and kids are welcome. Our opening act is ZenLizard. Music begins at 6:00 p.m. Garage Ma Hall is located at 6300 W. Tropical Pkwy, Las Vegas. To get there, take I-95 Fwy north to Ann Road, right to Rainbow, left to Tropical Pkwy, right to 6300 (on left/north side of street). Parking on the street is ample. Check out www.MySpace.com/Garage_Ma_Hall If you prefer parking valet, then either bring your own valet, or go to the valet at the Bellagio and walk (about 14 miles.) Can’t wait to see you. Steven
Please, RSVP with the number in your group to PaperCymbal2@aol.com THANKS!

Read Every Sunday - 2006 Steven writes a Sunday column in the Las Vegas Review Journal. See the "Web Sites" page for the weekly link . . . You Don't Need a Paintbrush To Be An Artist (from column archives) Art is such a mystery. Some people simply must interpret and claim their human experience through an artistic medium. They paint. They draw. They sing. They write. They create. The rest of us are blessed by the artist's endeavor because, if it is art, we find our own human story in the artist's work. A paradox: Great art is always uniquely personal to the artist, yet its connection to the wider world is universal. Artists often wonder if they are exhibitionists. But it is not the artist we're staring at. It is ourselves. If you are an artist in any medium, then you've heard it before. Friends or strangers have leaned over your sketch, your painting, listened to your song or admired your craft, shaken their heads and said, "I'm just not very artistic." For most people, the world is neatly divided into "artists" and "not-artists." If you want to provoke anxiety in the average person, ask him to draw a picture in front of his peers. You can graduate from anxiety to panic by asking that same person to prepare and give a public speech. For sheer terror, ask him to sing and dance in front of an audience. Most of us are glad to have artists around because that significantly reduces the chances that anyone might ask us to express ourselves artistically. Don't get me wrong. I'm not one of those folks who says that everyone could be an artist if he or she really tried. It's not true, at least not in the classic sense of the word "artist." I have a friend, for example, whose brain can't hear him sing. I know this because, if my friend's brain could hear my friend sing, my friend would immediately stop singing. He loves me that much. But there's another, lesser-known use of the word "art."... read the rest of this article and others by clicking here. |
